(Tallahassee, Fla.) - Victoria Pearson, a PhD candidate at Florida State University, is excited to announce
that she will be giving members of the community the chance to help name newly discovered viruses.
She has been researching viruses in the environment in and around Tallahassee for the last few years
and has found nearly 100 viruses that are completely new to the
scientific community. As her research project
continues it is likely she will find even more new viruses.
All of these new viruses need names and she would love to have these names represent the Tallahassee community, the fans of Florida State University, and anyone who loves the sciences.
Crowdfunding scientific research has been on the uprise recently and Victoria is currently running a
crowdfunding project on experiment.com. By backing $50 towards her research project any member of
the community can help name a virus! Suggested names include a friend or loved ones name, a favorite
sports team, or even a movie reference! On top of this, all backers will receive a
Valentine’s Day card to give to their loved ones as a special thank you from Victoria.
experiment.com verifies the researchers are who they say they are, and also that the
scientific projects on their website are feasible and
scientifically sound. The funds raised also go to Florida State University
to be spent only for the project described and not directly to the researcher.
More from

Pearson:
"Although viruses are the most abundant life form on the planet we have only just begun to explore the range of the diversity. I have been studying the diversity present in the Tallahassee area and have already found almost 100 never-seen-before viruses! I am asking for public help to help name these viruses and to raise the funds to be able to continue this research.
Interested community members can explore my website: www.experiment.com/virus or my blog post on naming the viruses:
