After
nearly a years on a 3 billion mile journey,
the Spacecraft New Horizons passed Pluto on
June 14th 2015.
The video
animation below was created with high
quality images taken during the fly by.
The mountains are visible and peak at 2.2
miles above Pluto’s surface. NASA
estimates these mountains formed about 100 million years ago.
John Spencer, the deputy team leader of the New Horizons Geology, Geophysics and Imaging Team (GGI),
said in a press
release. "This may cause us to rethink what powers geological activity on many other icy worlds,"
