While
Drones take to the sky by many drone owners
for various uses such as aerial photography,
video shoots for amateurs and professionals
use, and for recreational purposes, there are
criminals out there who may intend to do
harm utilizing a drone, or non-criminal drone users who may be reaching the restricted
limits of airspace.
The Dutch police have come up with a plan to
utilize eagles that are trained by a firm in The Hague
(Guards From Above) who specialize in training birds of prey for private
security, so as to help protect the skies
from rogue drones. The eagles are trained to
recognize drones as prey and intercept them.
Currently, The project is just a trial, and
seems to be pretty successful.
“In the future drones will be used increasingly, so [it] will increase the number of incidents involving drones,” the Netherland’s Police said in a
statement. “Drones can also be used for criminal purposes.”
The video below shows a demonstration of the eagle’s work, the National Police said in a statement. The force is also exploring nets as an option, but trained eagles would give them more control over where the captured drones are taken.
