China
Develops World's First Hydrogen-Powered Tram
Clean
Transit might be just what China needs. The sleek, orange locomotive
made its debut this month in Qingdao, China.
It resembles a high-speed bullet train. But this new
a tram, not a train can reach speeds of
about 43 miles per hour, not nearly as fast
as bullet trains reaching 200 mph+.
Chinese officials plans include spending 200 billion yuan ($32 billion) over the next five years to increase tram tracks
to more than 1,200 miles, and to buy more trams, according to the Xinhua state news agency.
“The average distance of tramcar lines in China is about fifteen kilometers [nine miles], which means one refill for our tram is enough for three round trips,” said Liang.
The vehicle-Tram was developed by Sifang, a subsidiary of China South Rail
Corporation. Hydrogen fuel cells have been around for a while and are currently being
in various vehicles, including buses, China
is the first nation to develop the technology for
tram use.
