Poachers
are seeking the rhino’s horn,
leading to a severe decline in the Rhino
population, also
due to habitat destruction.. Rhinoceroses use to thrive in
numbers in Africa and Southern Asia.
When rhinos are poached, their horns are cut off,
and sometimes the rest of the rhinos’ body is left
behind. Conservationists have begun to surgically remove the horns from rhinos,
in order to prevent de-horning.
It's believed rhino horns are an
aphrodisiac in some Chinese and Vietnamese cultures,
others use them for decorations.
Dehorning will not end poaching completely by itself, but
it will reduce the number of rhinos
poached/killed, dramatically.
